Normally when we stay in Bangkok, we aim for high rise hotels. Sukhothai is a low rise building but in this case it didn’t bother us at all. We booked an Executive Suite via Hotels.com. I consider 136€ for a 76 square metre room quite a reasonable price even if it was without breakfast. The decor of the room is Thai style and includes a lot of wooden details. The interior was beautiful although I usually prefer more scandinavian style myself.

The bathroom was huge and took probably 25 square metres of the total. There was, of course, a separate bathtub and shower cubible and enough smaller essentials for a shampoo bottle nerd (toothbrush, body milk and wohoo, loofah!). The bigger room was a good choice for our small family. Our son was able to sleep in peace and quiet and we were able to chill out in the separate “living room area”. There would have been enough space to place a sliding door between the living area and bedroom..Perhaps that would have just ruined the feng shui of the room. Uusi 100 Uusi 101 Amenities and service

Since we stayed only one night, we didn’t have too much time to use Sukhothai’s amenities or restaurants. We did however book an airport pick up via hotel. It was a pleasant feeling to step into properly air conditioned S series Mercedes where you had cold water and refreshing towels waiting for you.

We bought hotel breakfast separately for 1000 bahts. In the breakfast room I noticed that the hotel was mainly used by business people. We didn’t see any other children during our time. There were no queues in the breakfast restaurant and the quality was true 5 stars.

I really wanted to test Sukhothai’s recommended restaurants but we were so exhausted after our flight that we only managed to order from the room menu. Phad Thai, green curry and mango with sticky rice were delicious, beautifully placed onto the plate and reasonably priced (for a 5 star hotel). Hotel’s Celadon reataurant has been chosen the best restaurant in town by Travel and Leisure magazine. No wonder.

In the morning we did have time to take a quick swim in the pool. The pool area followed calm and sophisticated style of the hotel. Service in the pool area was polite and sun loungers felt like beds. The service in general was excellent. I bet this is one of the reasons why Sukhothai has been able to keep its status despite of multiple high rise luxury newcomers. Sukhothai is located along hectic Sathorn road. I was suprised how calm and quiet the hotel area was. When I took a walk in the hotel garden, I couldn’t believe I was in the middle of hectic Bangkok. We have stayed a few times in the next door Banyan Tree so the area was familiar to us. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes by foot to reach Sala Daeng skytrain station and Silom Road’s restarants/market places. Uusi 104 Uusi 103 I would recommend Sukhothai for couples and business travellers who are looking for calm and sophisticated old school hotel. We didn’t feel uncomfortable although we had our son with us but I wouldn’t want to distroy the calm fengshui of the hotel with a bunch of screaming kids.
